2024 Learn to Kayak Beginners Courses

Certified Canoeing Ireland Intro Skills courses for beginners are held at the club in June and July, run twice a week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for 4 weeks, with a 5th session on the follow up Saturday or Sunday after the last mid-week session.
PKC Learn to Kayak courses aims to enable participants to:
- Kayak safely and competently on flat water, Grade I rivers, or very sheltered coastal areas, as a member of a group of peers.
- Be able to carry out basic safety and rescue techniques with the assistance of another member of the group or the person in the water.
- Be able to safely plan and carry out a trip in a flat-water environment considering all relevant factors.

Dates:
Course 1 Tuesdays June 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th & Saturday June 29th
Course 2 Wednesdays June 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th & Sunday June 30th
Course 3 Tuesdays July 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd & Saturday July 27th
Course 4 Wednesdays July 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th & Sunday July 28th
Times:
- Arrival at the club between 6 and 6.20pm for change & gear selection.
- Courses start at 6.30pm and finishes typically at 9pm.
- Please do arrive on time as late arrivals may not be allowed on the water for safety reasons.
Our instructors:
- All courses are led by qualified instructors and assisted by members of Phoenix Kayak Club.
Club facilities:
- All safety and kayak equipment are provided to course participants.
- Our clubhouse has changing rooms, toilets, and a kitchen with teas, coffees and treats for after the paddle.
- Car parking is available on site, but with limited spaces.
What to wear:
- For health and safety reasons, you must bring and wear your own wetsuit (or suitable clothes that can get wet), AND suitable closed footwear, such as old trainers or wet shoes. No attendee will be allowed on the water barefoot, with slippers, crocs or equivalent.
- Bring a towel and a change of clothes.
Who can attend?
- Anyone over the age of 12 AND who can swim at least 25m (or be very comfortable in the water).
- We strongly recommend children to attend courses with a parent/guardian.
How much?
- Adult (18+) €150.00
- Juvenile (under 18) €110.00
What to expect?
- Our popular courses are often the first step to becoming a full member of Phoenix Kayak Club.
- During the course you will be introduced to basic kayaking strokes, water competencies, and taught how to kayak safely. You can check resources on paddling strokes, and how to feel comfortable on and in the water with skills such as wet-exits, T-rescue and X-rescue techniques.
- Expect to have fun, get wet, and meet like minded people!
