Welcome to the fun of kayaking
Welcome to Phoenix Kayak Club
A BIT ABOUT US
Phoenix Kayak Club is in existence for over 30 years. Our Membership has continued to grow Year on Year.
We run Beginners Kayaking courses throughout the Summer months at our Club on the Lee Road and continue to kayak throughout the winter months with official club trips every two weeks and a number of members meeting up on a more regular basis to fulfill their paddling ambition.
We are always looking for new members so get in touch with us or maybe do a Beginners Kayaking course first.
HOW WE HELP THE COMMUNITY
Not only do our members love teaching others how to kayak, we also support a number or charitable events throughout the year, we provide rescue support for the Musgrave triathalon as well as The Martin Duggan swim in Fermoy, The Lee Swim, The Gadd Swim, etc.
We also run a number of social inclusion nights where we take out community groups from around the city out on the water for a bit of fun.
WHO ARE WE?
We are people who love our sport, and we come from different backgrounds and walks of life and welcome everyone to our club. Some of us have represented Ireland in our sport.
We are a 100% voluntarily run Club, We seek grants and funding to help run our club.
There is a genre of kayaking for everyone, from those who are very competitive to those who just want to have fun!
The story so far
Phoenix Kayak Club was founded in the early 1980’s when members met at the Lee Fields car park. Kayakers took over the car park so regularly that Cork City Council offered the club a site across the river hoping to return the car park to the motorists of Cork!
After securing a 99-year non-commercial sporting lease on our Lee Road site Phoenix grew steadily out-growing the shipping containers that we called home for many years.
After many hard years of fundraising the clubhouse dream became a reality with the 2010 boat store completion at a cost just shy of €100,000.
Not resting on that success work soon began to complete the first floor requiring a mammoth fundraising task of €270,000, members grant and fundraising efforts were rewarded with a Sports Development grant of €120,000 and we were on our way with the club finally taking title of the building in 2019.
The completion of the clubhouse is a testament to the tireless dedication of those members who selflessly gave their time and expertise to drive and oversee the project to completion.
We now had a base and focal point to increase our efforts to introduce people to the fun and adventure of kayaking. Upwards of 150 people a year have joined us on training courses but we also provide safety support to charity events such as the Lee, Garinish Island, Sandycove and Musgrave Triathlon swims and run sessions for disadvantaged community groups. Phoenix Kayak Club instructors give their time and knowledge free of charge and all income raised; grants, membership and courses is put back into the club.
We love seeing people enjoy water whether that it’s mastering skills, sea kayak sunsets, the adrenaline of white water or socialising with friends on a weekend away. Members organising outings are a regular feature of the club, we encourage skills development by exploring new disciplines, encouraging and supporting people wherever we can.
In recent years we have won Canoeing Ireland’s Club Championship, members have
paddled Alp’s whitewater, river & sea kayaked around Europe, had sporting success at National events, represented Ireland at International events and we welcomed home a World Surf Kayaking Champion!!
We aim to develop the club beyond the heights we have already reached and look forward to you joining us on this kayaking adventure, we hope you get as much enjoyment out of kayaking as we do.
